John: You've referred to Ray Brown on a number of occasions for exigetical understanding of the text. Who is he?

"I told you and you did not trust." This applies to me way to often!!

I like the linkage of psychological health ("healthy ego development", "mature psychology", "psychological independence") to hearing and following the Shepherd. Secular psychologists might have a problem with the idea that mature mental health is only possible by listening to and following God, but if God exists, its almost tautologically true. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'll ever figure out what "mental health" really is, so in the meantime, I'll just try to enjoy the gifts God has given me.

Good approach! Fr. Ray Brown is a Roman Catholic Biblical scholar who died just a few years ago. He is the author of a two-volume commentary on the fourth gospel which is widely recognized to be one of the best resources on the subject.
